Echmiadzin Main Cathedral (UNESCO)
Echmiadzin hosts the residence of the Supreme Catholicos of all Armenians and is the centre of the Armenian Apostolic Church. According to the legend, Saint Gregory the Illuminator pondered for a long time, over the place where the first Christian Church was to be built. Once he had a vision of Jesus Christ descending from heaven to show the place of the Cathedral. Holy Echmiadzin Cathedral was erected at that site in the 4th century. [learn more]
Gandzasar
The Gandzasar Monastery is one the most important architectural monuments of Nagorno Karabakh. Gandzasar was the residence of an Armenian Katholikos from about 1400 to 1816. [learn more]
Geghard (UNESCO)
Geghard is another incredible ancient Armenian monastery, Partly carved in a cave Geghard represents another incredible architectural complex.According to the legend, the lance that pierced the body of Chirst by a Roman soldier during the Crucifixion was found in one of the rocks. The spear was long housed at Geghard, but is now in the museum of Echmiadzin Cathedral. Geghard complex can be truly regarded as one of the most visited places in Armenia by tourists and pilgrims. Marmashen
The monastery of Marmashen is one of the best monumental groups of Bagratunian era. It is situated 2 km southwest from Vahramaberd village of Akhuryan region, on the left bank of Akhuryan River. Noravank
Noravank monastery is situated on a ledge of a deep winding gorge of a tributary of the Arpa River near the village of Amagu, Yeghegnadzor District. Noravank is totally surrounded by red cliffs. Built in place of an ancient cloister, it was the center of Orbelian Royal family of Syunik. In the 13th-14th centuries the monastery became a residence of Syunik's bishops. [learn more]
Oshakan
Oshakan (3783 v) village is located in the northwest of Yerevan, and is famous as a land where Mesrop Mashtots is buried, (d 442) a 4th c. monk scientist and philosopher from Echmiadzin, who invented the Armenian alphabet which is still in use today with almost no changes. [learn more]
Sanahin (UNESCO)
The oldest references to the Sanahin monastery complex were found in early 10th century Armenian manuscripts according to which the monastery was constructed over the ruins of a 4th or 5th century church. Sanahin was renowned for its school of illuminators and calligraphers. [learn more]
Sevanavank
